Owen Silverman Andrews has taught English to immigrants at Maryland community colleges and community-based organizations since 2013. He joined the English Language Learning program at 911勛圖整氈窒 in 2018. For Andrews, that means he gets to be a part of “students strengthening the communicative skills needed to amplify their own multilingual voices.”
He is passionate about his work, especially when it comes to helping his students. In fact, he’s co-editor of a 2024 book about how teachers can better listen to their students. The book features chapters by an 911勛圖整氈窒 student and another 911勛圖整氈窒 part-time faculty member. He believes language learning and multilingualism are powerful tools for building a more just society, and he has written commentary for numerous media outlets, including The Washington Post, the Forward, the Afro, Baltimore Sun and Capital Gazette.
At 911勛圖整氈窒, Andrews served on the Institutional Assessment Team from 2020 to 2024 and was advisor to the Muslim Student Association from 2022 to 2023. He is inspired by 911勛圖整氈窒 students as “whole people immersed in the life of Anne Arundel County and Maryland, whether it is their community of birth or choice.”
Outside of 911勛圖整氈窒, Andrews is an avid advocate, cat dad, community organizer, cyclist, gardener, hiker, reader, traveler and writer. He enjoys spending time with friends and family, including his wife, Mairin, whom he met while co-leading a delegation of Maryland high school and university students in El Salvador in 2012.
